A favorite C.S. Lewis quote
“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”
― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
We can think about this in two directions. First, we were made for the "garden world" of Genesis, that place where God walks with humanity in the coolness of the afternoon and where humanity finds itself in right relationship with God, with each other, and with the created world. Created with the image of God embedded in us, that was the world for which we were created.
But that world is no more.
So, secondly, we find now that we were created for the world of Revelation 21, that place to come where chaos and disorder are vanquished, where the light of Christ shines always, and where God once again lives among humanity.
The new heaven and the new earth – restored, renewed, and re-created.
The image of God in humanity – even those who find themselves far from God – hints toward something greater and something better; something more real than the real we now experience.
